Makayla grew up in Southern California and completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. While at UCI, she conducted undergraduate research in the group of Prof. William J. Evans studying the synthesis and reactivity. of low valent and terminal alkyl species of the rare-earth elements.
